uPnP Forum on the New Universal Plug and Play Devices Coming Out

Scott Lofgren of the uPnP forum joined us at TPN CES live broadcast. Of course, the Universal Plug and Play forum is meant for those networking devices together.

Today, any sensor can utilize uPnp. Whether computer, TV, auto, or wearable technology, uPnp is in a position to help make these items talk with each other through your mobile device.

“I think it’s a very unique time for uPnP where we can grow and ease the pain for others that are trying to come up with their own solutions,” stated Lofgren.

A study a couple years ago stated we are connecting 2 devices to the internet. With wearable technology and home automation, uPnP is looking to create a standard platform so all devices connect with each other.

Netatmo June: Wearable Technology Jewelry Monitors Sun Exposure

Netatmo June
Netatmo June

You may see a bracelet, but its really a piece of technology. Amanda Garnier of Netatmo joined us on the TPN CES live broadcast. She was showing off their newest product called June – a sun exposure monitor.

June will give you personalized sun protection advice based on your skin type. Camille Toupet – a Harry Winston and Louis Vuitton collaborator – has taken on this project to make wearable technology look like something you want to wear. The bracelet has a metal alloy crystal-like face, and on the bottom houses the USB port to connect to a smartphone. You wear this bracelet and it will record how much UV light you are getting.

“We really wanted to make a beautiful object that women would want to wear on their day-to-day lives,” says Amanda Garnier.”This isn’t for just the beach or on vacation — this is for everyday. So what makes us unique is we really take the wearables to that design place. A lot of women coming by saying they would wear even if it didn’t do anything.”

The bracelet centerpiece is high-quality UV sensors. The wearable can be taken off the strap and worn on the body — as long as the sensor is exposed to the sun. Using Bluetooth LE, it sends information to the app. You fill information in the app beforehand – hair color, eye color – to get your skin type and what the exposure would do. 100% is a sunburn.

Most interesting, it makes you aware of how your skin gets exposed throughout the day. At any time you could get burned, even if you don’t think you’ve been out in the sun that long.

June will be coming our right before summer for $99. To get a Weather station, check out Amazon.  For more information check out netatmo.com

Pebble, Google Glass Apps with Mercedes Benz

Mercedes Benz app on Pebble watch
Mercedes Benz app on Pebble watch

Mercedes Benz is working with the wearable technology in helping you drive better, safer. People who have a Pebble watch, for example, gives you customized functions via your wrist. You can stop music, change temperature and more — all dependent on what functions you program into the watch.

The Pebble app also contains an alert system. Low fuel, low tire pressure, and emergency issues Pebble will alert you with that. When the iPhone disconnects from the car, the Pebble changes to “Walking mode” so you can view more information. The watch will locate your car for you, tell you if the doors are locked, and a lot more.

Mercedes Benz also has an app for Google Glass, although that app has different functions. The Walking mode is present, but other alerts are suppressed to avoid text and driving issues.

Vuzix M100 Smart Glass vs. Google Glass

Vuzix-M100Of course, I wear Google Glass. Vuzix has their own wearable technology in the Vuzix M100 Smart Glass. Therefore, I had to see what their glass was all about.

Geared toward industrial or commercial use, the M100 can snap onto a pair of safety goggles so you can use them and stay protected. The M100 is an Android based wearable that can track events, scan product, take pictures and video, manage calendars, and much more.

Although I said the M100 works well for industrial, healthcare, retail and other use, it can also be used as a personal device, just like Glass is. Tether it to your phone to talk back and forth or just sync with Wifi.
