If you take a lot of pictures or videos with your iPhone or iPad you know that it can get quite awkward after a while. The MirrorCase allows you to hold your iPhone or iPad in a more natural position while taking pictures or videos. You can save everything directly to the iPhone or iPad camera roll. You can set different resolutions to save storage space. There is a built-in acoustic port which directs the sound back toward the user. There is also a built-in stand which you can adjust to various heights. The mirror itself is a second surface mirror with a piece of glass on top to prevent the mirror from being scratched. When you take a picture using the mirror there is no distortion added to the photo by the mirror. The basic app on the iPhone and iPad are free. Developers can work on either the iOS platform or the Android platform. The IOS platform works with the Xcode package in Objective C. The Android platform uses the Eclipse package in Java. Is it a Json library with an API call. The head unit software accepts and manage the information. The head unit software is being open to the industry. Ford is trying to work with competitors so that developers don’t have to develop a different package for each car company.

The apps once developed or tweaked for the environment will be available directly through iTunes and the Google Play Store. Ford is also continuing to work on opening up their diagnostic platform or OpenXC Platform to produce more data for research. Their original product was a CNC-machined base for iPhone charging. Ford does it’s updates via a USB stick which they provide to Ford drivers free of charge. According to the Ford representative most users where able to do the update themselves.

The majority of new Fords now being sold have Ford Sync in them. One of the great things about Ford Sync is that it works in a noisy environment. You can use it in a convertible with the top down going down the highway. Ford believes that listening to their customers and developing and maintaining a quality product is key.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, MyCharge unveiled a whole new line of portable charging solutions. Depending on your choice from the new lineup, you can potentially charge up to three devices at one time. There are a variety of choices and also a variety of colors and designs to suit everyone’s tastes.

The new line, which will include the Lightning connector for Apple, is expected to launch in the April-May timeframe. Depending on the charger you decide on, the price can range from $39 to $129.

NFC has been a solution looking for a problem for some time, but products using NFC to solve real world issues are finally beginning to appear. Todd speaks with Brad from LG about how NFC is helping get video off smartphones and onto TVs.

Most people wanting to show video from their smartphone on their TV would automatically reach for a cable and then probably spend the next 10 minutes hunting around for the adaptor to plug the TV’s HDMI cable into the phone’s much smaller socket. NFC eliminates all this by wirelessly providing the information needed to stream the video to the TV using Miracast and all the person has to do is place his or her smartphone on the NFC tag. It’s not limited to sending video to the TV from the smartphone as the reverse is also possible: they can view what’s on the smart TV on their smartphone. Smart Phones on LTE Networks Require Smarter Fill In

Smart phones are driving the FCC band assignments for cellular services for the new LTE technology. The problem is that they add additional frequency bands as they add higher speed coverage. Carriers have gained authorization for new frequencies but the laws of physics still introduce dead spots on the road and in buildings.

Wilson Electronics has a new line of Range Extenders that solve the problem with five band ‘Quint Band’ versions that include this new spectrum for Verizon and ATT LTE services. They are suitable for mobile use or to extend the signals into marginal signal areas in warehouses or small business operations.

Looking for a new car? How about an Audi RS5? We take a look at the 420 HP V8 engine.

With the Audi MMI navigation plussystem, the RS5 will give you a QNX system with an embedded Google Earth client on top of their navigation system. This is all the Audi cars – Q7 – A6 – A8 – A5 and A3 (at the end of the year).

Audi is working on bringing 4G into the car. There is already 3G embedded through T-Mobile. 4G will be with AT&T and T-Mobile.

If you are constantly on the move, you probably  struggle to keep your devices charged throughout the day. You try techniques like disabling services in an attempt to keep within your battery capacity when you are out of the office or car, unable to charge your device – and end up without information from a critical app.  Or, you might be on a long trek away from power mains but still within wireless range. You need more power.

The Nectar Mobile Power System is a flameless fuel cell that combines a hydrocarbon (butane) with oxygen from the air – producing electricity as a by-product.  This technology came from MIT, and uses a solid oxide fuel cell, converting any hydrocarbon into electricity. Fully approved for airplane travel, the system can provide two weeks of cellphone power on a single charge that costs less than $10.

Stopped by the Griffin booth and found out about their newest device – the Mic Connect. This is a box that will take any XLR micorophone and connect it to an iPad. The Mic Connect runs on AA batteries and has a +48 switch. That means it will supply the phantom power to a microphone so you can use whatever you choose.

Griffin Mic Connect (Griffin Mic Connect) also uses the 3.5 mm jack instead of the connector. That way you are assured you can use whatever iOS or Android device to record podcasts, music or other audio.

Behringer iStudio

Behringer is planning to release the Behringer iStudio – a dock for your iPad that allows you to connect microphones, instruments, MIDI and more. Load up Garageband and you can mix music from the iStation. Call up a program like Jambox Pro and turn the iStudio into your own guitar pedalboard.

The iStudio was expected to be released in Q4 for 2012 but with some complications and the introduction with a 9-pin connector, Behringer will be releasing later this year for $199 (no iPad included).

It acts as a remote control for your devices, like an Android phone or tablet or a Windows 8 device. When paired with your TV, it turns your big screen into an Android device and if your phone rings you can answer it through Joystick’s built-in speaker. It even has a full QWERTY keyboard to add to the functionality. The keyboard is hidden beneath a small flip-up 1080p screen.

The product is expected to be released in the spring of this year with a price point of “between $249 and $349″.

Celluon Epic

If you have a mobile device (iPad, Android tablet) with Bluetooth and wanted to have a different type of keyboard for it, then check this out. The Celluon Epic is the next stage in Bluetooth laser projection keyboards.

About half the size of the Magic Cube, the Epic can project a full keyboard on a surface within bluetooth range to the device. This will be perfect if Apple TV turns on their bluetooth options. You can then sit on the couch and type on the coffee table looking for your favorite shows.

Celluon Epic will be available around March for $169. The Magic Cube (another projection laser keyboard which is roughly twice the size) is available now for $149. Celluon also has solutions for the iPhone and for medical professionals. (www.celluon.com)

Felt Audio also introduced what they call the world’s smallest speaker system at CES 2013. It also works through Bluetooth. It has omnidirectional microphone so you can use it in a meeting or any group. You can use the speaker either attached to the smart phone or separate like the modular system. It will connect with any Bluetooth device within three-seconds. You can clip the speaker to your belt or you can use the included stand and place it on a table.

Both the Bluetooth modular system and the speaker will be available in April for $99. The first 5000 customers who purchase the modular system from the Felt Audio website will receive a free case. You can preorder either the modular system or the speakers through the website now. It appears to be well made and I like the way to looks. As soon as I have some money available I’m going to preorder the modular system. Once I have it I will give you my review on how it works in the real world, but for now just the idea intrigues me.

Chrysler Introduces the Via Mobile Package

Enhancing the experience is a brand new navigation system that takes up the entire screen, complete with 3D models, pan-and-zoom, traffic (through SiriusXM). One cool, subtle feature that brings the entire nav together is called One-Step Destination Entry, where you can use your voice and give a command in one breath, such as “Navigate to (address).” You can also give the system points of interest, which commands such as “Find Nearest (name of place).”

Apps, with Buttons

What’s cool about the Apps Button is that all of your embedded apps, plus all of the apps from your phone, are displayed together through the dashboard screen, fully integrated using the Via Mobile package. Apps like iHeartRadio and more all connect to the dashboard, forcing the phone to turn off when the vehicle is in motion, which reduces distracted driving. Chrysler has partnered with Sprint as well and has embedded a 3G radio into their 2013 vehicles. With that, pressing the 911 button will take you immediately to a 911 dispatcher and not to a call center and queue. Better yet, it’s using Sprint’s integrated signal to make the call without tying up your cell phone line. Using the Assist app will display three different call centers: roadside assistance, uConnect to answer questions about your online account and smartphone app and the vehicle-specific call center to answer questions about problems you may have with your vehicle.

No announcements on timing, vehicle availability or pricing has been announced yet, but Chrysler said to stay tuned for news on that very soon.

Road Warriors are famous for multi-tasking on the run. One of the consequences is that they often run out of their hotel rooms or airline business clubs with a variety of chargers left behind – either behind drapes, under desks or in the out-of-the-way places that outlets live.

Qualcomm was showing off its software platform Skifta at CES 2012, which works with the DLNA platform. Think of Skifta as Airplay for Android. Once Skifta is installed on your Android device, it will go out and find any DLNA enabled device including TV’s, computers and the Playstation. You can then sending any media that is available on your network to that device. Skifta also gives you access to various Internet providers including Revision3, Ted Talks, Facebook and others.

Qualcomm is also developing a Skifta audio adapter which you attach to a receiver that is not DLNA enable and enable it. They are also making a DLNA platform that can be installed easily by the manufacture into a receiver. I installed the Skifta application on my Android phone and it almost immediately connected and found the media on my network. Once I set up an account it also let me pick up media from Revision3 and Ted Talks among others. Unfortunately I don’t have a connected TV, so for me its use is limited, but I love its possibilities.

The app is built to work in all light conditions, including at night, and gives audio alerts when it detects any dangers. iOnRoad claims the app uses 30 percent less battery power than your mapping app. The iOnRoad app is currently free, but will be $9.99 soon. If you already have a iOS device, then you might want to consider a Belkin accessory. This is a small dongle which connects to your iOS device using the 30 pin connector. Normally you would need an antenna to watch live TV however Belkin and Mobile Content Venture have developed a way around that problem by making the headphones the antenna. When you are ready to watch TV, just hit the Dyle application and you are ready to go.

At this time there is no pricing or availability date for the US for either of these two devices. The Dyle application will be free and available from the iOS store.

Steve Brown, CEO of Catch joined us. It’s a private journal for all your ideas on your mobile device. Catch takes the messy desk and lets the organization come together.

You just put your information in the phone. Tag it with specific names. Then, when you want to look back, search on the tags.

Catch looks at the stories. Instead of post-it notes all over the place, you can have the journal on the phone.

Steve was also catching all lyrics from his band. That way, he could come back to get all the words they were thinking of.

Catch Notes is a free service, and available on Android and iOS devices.

The app can also be used on an iPod, which, if you are going for a run, is useful, since that is a common device to carry along. The app also has a simple “Send Panic Alert” button so if a situation unexpectedly arises you can quickly send a message for help. Prize Monkey is based off the idea that people love free stuff and the instant gratification that goes along with it, specifically when you use your mobile device. Using their “un-kiosk” and the cloud, users can interact with the monkey on the screen and impact his actions based off of input from their phones or tablets. Prize Monkey looks to partner up with different companies who create different promotional products to appeal specific demographics.

For CES 2012, Prize Monkey created a small demonstration of their product and by using an iPad, you go to the site, enter your email address and you will earn some “bananas” that you can then tap on to redeem a prize from the vending machine, in this case it was a small table hockey toy. Of course, the natural extension is making loyalty points important again and Prize Monkey looks to venture into supermarkets and even sports stadiums. There is some definite potential here if the right companies want to get on board and turn common social interactions into exposure for their brands.
