The phones are hearing aid compliant, and it is possible to boost the volume of a single call for clarity and level. The unit that we examined featured a clear black and white high contrast display, and enabled adult children to attach photos to speed dial numbers. The company also provides a pendant system that directs phone calls to a number that you have assigned. Using DECT technology, it has a range of 600 ft and provides a speakerphone system and speed dial. Incoming calls can also be answered by the device, and features audio caller ID, allowing screening of calls.

What if you had a pillbox that could tell you when it’s time to take your medicine? The Medfolio Medication Reminder System at CES 2013 is set up to help patients with multiple medications remember their medications through multiple forms of reminders.

Julie Mason from Medfolio chats with Health Tech Weekly guest host Chris Montera about how she started the program and product development for the the medication reminder system. She’s a pharmacist who worked for many years with the Veterans Administration. In the past she has spent time working with patients on medication adherence and going into their homes to help them develop tools to remember their pills.

Basic Pill Box Enters 21st Century

The Medfolio system is build around a basic pillbox system because that is something consumers are familiar with. The device has been upgraded to the 21st century with built in software that allows patients or caregivers to enter medications and times into the system. When it’s time for a medication, that compartment will light up in the box and an alert chime will sound.

When coupled with an online reporting system, the Medifolio Medication Reminder device can trigger email or text alerts to both the patient and their caregivers.

This type of initiative can have a positive effect on the whole family and, indeed, the community.

Monitoring Heart Rate Improves Fitness

Checking your heart rate during workouts makes those workouts more effective. To really see that benefit, you need to get your heart rate into a target range that burns calories and to do that, you must use some sort of heart rate monitoring technique or tool.

Heart Math Inner Balance App

He’s not just wearing fashionable ear-wear, host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic is trying to find his inner balance with the new Heart Math Inner Balance app. We’re syncing breathing and heart rate to reduce stress at CES 2013.

Heart Math Inner Balance helps to find that balance by measuring heart rate variability. When we’re stressed the variability of our heart rate is higher than when we’re calm. The app gives a visual representation on the screen when connected to the ear clip sensor.

Visual Cues Trigger Balance

Using the visual cues, the user attempts to calm breathing and heart rate variability so that a uniform green color is displayed on the color wheel. The app tracks progress and a favorite photo can be tied to positive results to trigger later periods of balance.

The sensor clip and the app will both be available in February, 2013.

Hapifork changes diet habits

Hapifork changes the way you eat and breaks bad habits with good vibrations, coming to you from CES 2013. Hapilabs co-founder Phillipe chats with Jamie Davis, the Podmedic about why it’s important to slow down when we eat.

The hapifork tracks three things while you are eating. It measures the duration of your meal, it counts the number of fork servings you eat, and it times the interval between each fork serving you eat. With this data, the user can make changes to his eating habits and slow down the pace of his meals, extend the duration of the meals, and take smaller bites when eating.

Eat Slower, Get Full Faster

The goal is to eat slower so that the body has time to “feel” full with less food. The Hapifork manages the intervals between bites by vibrating whenever a fork serving is lifted from the plate too quickly following the previous bite. This interval can be adjusted to be longer or shorter in duration so that a user can start with a shorter interval between bites and gradually increase the interval through gentle reminders from the Hapifork.

The Hapifork will be released as a pre-offer via Kickstarter.com in February with an expected launch in April, 2013. It will come with an accompanying smartphone app, ability to track all data via Hapilabs web services.

At CES Unveiled, Jamie Davis, the Podmedic got a chance to talk to the folks at Withings about their Smart Body Analyzer scale. According to Alexis it’s not just your ordinary bathroom scale.

This new home scale was awarded a CES 2013 Innovations Award. This scale measures not just your weight, BMI and body fat but also your heart rate and home air quality (carbon dioxide levels) and temperature. The device also connects wirelessly via WiFi or Bluetooth with an app on your mobile device to track all the data.

Vitallink is a system that is installed on the older persons computer and it allows them to use applications such as Skype, or check the weather or answer email with a touch of a button. To answer email the elderly person can either type the answer as you would normally, or they can speak the reply. The use of video applications such as Skype are important because they allow the caregiver or relative to see their parent or grandparent. Seeing someone can tell you a lot more about their condition then a simple call. Elderly people are often reluctant to bother their off-spring because they don’t want to be a burden. Besides which would be better having grandma read a story over the phone to her grandchild or having grandma read the story through video chat, where the child can see and interact with their grandma. I know which method I would choose. The subscription for Vitallink is only $5.00 a month.

The two hardest groups to sell the product to is the elderly adult who are often computer phobic and the person who does the purchasing for the big box company who often are young and don’t recognize the elderly as an important market. Once the elderly adult uses the Vitallink technology for just a short time they are almost always sold on it. Unfortunately it takes a lot more time and effort to try to convince the young sales person of its necessity.

These devices are FDA cleared for connection to diagnostic medical devices on wifi. They are still going through the approval process for the 4G version. They hope to have those versions available for hospitals later this year. It is nice to know that now people in remote areas have a way to get access to the medical care, including the specialist that they need.

Basis is coming this spring with a wrist wearable health monitoring system to help you keep track of your overall activity level. Different from the heart monitors you would wear for working out, this new system will track your heart rate, temperature, perspiration, sleep and activity level as you go about your daily life. It will take that information and upload it to Basis’ cloud service and give you all the data along with some recommendations of things you need to do to get into better overall health.

Andy and Tom interview Ariel Garten, CEO ofInteraXon. InteraXon is thought controlled computing.  The system consists of a lightweight headset with two electrodes that detects brainwaves such as alpha and beta waves.  Different patterns are associated with different mental states, e.g. concentrating with beta waves and relaxed with alpha, so as your mind changes states an action can be taken.

Trivially, you can link your concentration to a light, so while you are concentrating on reading, the light is on and bright, but as you relax and drift off to sleep, the light dims before finally turning off.

Obviously, it’s early days for the technology and Ariel likens the current state to that of voice recognition 20 years ago. Ariel believes that in the future this will be the main way that users interact with technology.

On show was a game called ZenBound 2 which is available for the iPhone and iPad. Normally, the player uses their fingers to manipulate a rope around a sculpture but with InteraXon the player can use their mind to control the game. You can see this in Andy’s video or the original is here. At the end of the game, you can get a report about how you were able to focus or relax.

Ariel also mentions some of the possible medical benefits which are potentially available now that you have a portable EEG system. It uses both Bluetooth or Wifi to communicate from the headband to mobile devices.

Mr. Smeenk indicated that the way the system works is if an individual wearing the device disappears. The caregiver would then call EmFinder. EmFinder then activates the device and gets a signal. They then send that signal to the 911 dispatcher in the area where the signal is coming from. They also provide information about the wearer to the 911 dispatch. Normally once the signal is sent out it takes on 10-15 minutes to find the wearer. The devices cost $200 and there is a $25.00 monthly charge. It has has been in the market for only a year and is being directed toward consumers, law enforcement and senior institutions. As the population gets older these types of devices are going to become more popular.

The way it works is that the care-givers use Independa’s portal to setup the reminders for the relative, who is then reminded at the right time. Now the smart bit is that the older person doesn’t need to know anything about computers – the reminder is delivered to them by telephone. And to backup the reminder, the person has to confirm that they’ve taken their medication or else a further call is made to them a little later. Depending on the study, around 24% of medications are simply forgotten to be taken.

Life Stories is a little bit different but great idea. The care-giver places a call through the Independa system to their relative and asks him or her a question, like “How did you meet Mom / Dad?” or “What did you do in World War II?”. The ensuing conversation is recorded and can be passed onto the rest of the family. Brilliant.

WellDoc

Anand Lyer and Chris Bergstrom came on to the Live CES show to talk about WellDoc. This is the next generation of technology solutions supporting chronic disease management. Using the cell phone to monitor and coach them.

WellDoc is a company who’s software will record and report. By giving your doctor a timeline of what you have been doing, they will be able to treat better.

Think of WellDoc as a personal coach. It lets you know what you need to do. For diabetics, if your blood sugar is low, it will let you know how much sugar you really need.

We saw email on a big (little) announcement from Reeses before CES started. It piqued my interest, for sure. So when we saw the booth, we knew that technology has taken a turn for the better.

Motion Pod

Movea is a company where you most likely won’t hear of the name, but you use their products. Gyromouse is one of these products.

Movea takes care of the motion sensors inside some of your electronics. Screen pointers may use their technology to work. But Movea is working on some pretty cool stuff outside of that.
