A walk around Eureka Park at CES will always lead you to something new and exciting that will make you literally want to put your hands on it. Modular Robotics was no exception, as their namesake product allowed us to do just that. The company has created a line of blocks that all have little computer chips inside them that allow them to act and react to each other. Using blocks such as sensors, rollers, blinking lights, motors and more, you can build any type of creation you want, and then even program the blocks yourself to do things you want it to do. These cool gadgets are for ages 6-60 and are a great stocking stuffer or birthday present for anyone, young or old. You’ll want to see what we created in the video.

DRF – The Device Renewal Forum Certifies Phone Recycling

With over 2 billion wireless devices (mobile phones) produced every year, the recycling and reuse of these gadgets is an important environmental issue. Todd chats to Perry LaForge of the Device Renewal Forum about how many major companies are now approaching the issue.

The DRF’s mission is ”to expand the growth of the device renewal market through the development of a common and branded certification process for renewed wireless devices”, which means that for consumers, a DRF-certified device will have been properly processed, removing any traces of the previous owners data, and confirms that the phone meets the technical requirements for use on a mobile network. Several major companies, such as Sprint, are joining the scheme and for the sake of the planet, let’s hope the DRF is a success.

Sphero Releases Sharky the Beaver Mixed Reality App

GNC first saw Sphero at CES last year and it’s a really cool toy: a rugged waterproof ball controlled from a smartphone or tablet. So what has Sphero been up to in the past year…Todd and Don find out from Ian Bernstein, CTO Founder.

While the hardware is unchanged from last year, Sphero has grown the number and type of companion apps from around 5 apps to over 20 with several produced by third parties. New on the scene is a mixed reality app which uses the tablet or smartphone’s camera to track Sphero and overlay Sharky the Beaver on the device’s screen. It’s particularly fun as the real-world interaction with Sphero creates a relationship with the cartoon character which makes it that bit more believable.

Sphero works with both iOS and Android devices, and retails for around $130. Lots of fun and there’s an SDK if you feel like rolling your own (sorry!)

Here’s some insight into the world of design – taking standard features and capabilities and presenting them in a fresh way. Vivick Designs in headquartered in Vancouver, BC and, since 1986 has been behind many of the designs for products we use and wear. In this interview, we look at two novel designs, one for a LED study lamp that combines a Bluetooth speaker system – and also allows connection from the regular desktop computer, and the other a portable power supply that is designed to power devices such as tablet or smartphone when regular AC mains power is not available. It includes a means of stowing the line cord, all a part of the design for use that the company has as a specialty. Action Packed 360 Degree 4K Video on a Budget

There is nothing like the popular GoPro camera to get right in the middle of the action. This adapter from EyeMirror adds a full 360 degree view, and features a totally sealed enclosure so that the mirror never gets wet (tested to over 100 feet). The camera shoots at 4K, 24 Frames per second in a package that’s fully qualified for underwater adventure, and then the software translates it to a web page viewer that allows the reader to direct the view of the video to any point in the field of view. The system is not only usable for outdoor videography, but there are security applications where a 360 degree surveillance field is of interest. Streaming Live 3D video

This is a developers dream project, from a new company called Pairasight. It has been over two years in development – with a prototype that has been fabricated on a 3D printer. The capture device links to a smartphone which then transmits the signal to a website where it is displayed, and is viewable in 3D. The full 1080p video streams are both at 30 frames per second, from separate left and right 5 megapixel cameras, and include audio as well. The on-board processer CPU has less than 5% loading, and the developers anticipate that onboard realtime image processing will be in the next version of the device. With 600 mAh hour battery, it gives about 90 minutes of streaming – or about six hours without continuous streaming. Developers can have early access to the modules used in the device at SomThings.com, with single unit pricing of $200.

The initial applications for the device will be for EMT responses and repair or do-it-yourself advice with the realtime expert being connected on a wireless link. The developer’s hope that with early adoption efforts, it will become another tool for getting the right knowledge and skillset on site and on target. iGrill now on Android – with Geolocation and Social Networking

Two years ago at CES, iDevices Inc introduced a novel application for the iPhone – the iGrill temperature sensor. Theproduct continues to evolve. and is now available for Android and includes both geolocation and social networking. You might not think of GPS as being particularly useful for the iGrill accessory – but it turns out that thousands of people around the world are cooking out at the same time, and are very proud of what they do. iDevices links to their Facebook page, and allows them to post directly to their Facebook page. Mark Zuckerberg is a fan – cheerfully crashing the servers at iGrill as fans around the world checked them out.

iDevices does consulting for other companies, showing them how to integrate apps, geolocation and social media into their product lines. Their relationship with Apple enables new companies to quickly get on board.

NeroKwik: All Your Devices Photos Together

NeroKwik is a way to organize and share your pictures between your various devices and online services. It will work on no matter which platform each device is on. The photos show up as a tapestry. You can set it to a random view, a social view or a view by rating. If you rate your photos then in the rating view the higher the rating the bigger the photo will appear. You can also connect your Facebook account.and the more a photo is liked on Facebook the larger it will appear in the social tapestry. You can easily create a tapestry and share that tapestry with friends and then automatically see which ones they favorite. Those they favor will appear larger.

The app is available in the Google Play Store and should be available soon in iTunes and on the Windows Phones Market. Two devices and as many online services that NeroKwik supports is free. They are releasing a premium version later in the year. If you have more than two devices the cost will be $2–4 a month plus you will be able to connect to the pictures on your computer and add videos. NeroKwik does not store your pictures. The pictures stay on the original device and are just shared to the other devices.

Ride with Style and Hop on a Zboard, the Electric Skateboard

The Zboard, another Eureka Park work of art, is made by Intuitive Motion and is a new, fun way to travel. It’s a skateboard that is powered by a motor, but more importantly, is controlled by your feet. Simply lean on the front foot pad to accelerate and the back foot pad to brake, and how fast or slow you go is all dependant by how hard you press on the pads. The idea for Zboard came to the team while they were brainstorming for their senior project for the University of Southern California. One of the co-founders said he was tired of having bikes being stolen and was over having to push a skateboard around the hills and annoyingly uneven streets of Los Angeles. The Zboard is like a skateboard, except it’s faster and easier to ride, and it’s much more portable than a bicycle. You can reach speeds of up to 17MPH but when you ride it, it makes you feel like The Flash.

Freer Logic’s Body Wave Makes You Play Attention

Visiting the Freer Logic booth at Eureka park led us to discover a product called Body Wave, which allows you to increase your mental capacity, physical performance or even control objects around you, all by using your mind. While this may sound a little far-fetched, it actually worked, all from a device that we wore on our wrist that was slightly larger than an MP3 player. There are three sensors that are on the back of the Body Wave that touch your skin and begin looking for brainwave activity and patterns, which are then sent via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to a computer or mobile device. In our scenario, we were told to focus specifically on the object in front of us, the dolphin. Then, once Nick’s brain was in its focused, calm state (which is difficult for him), the dolphin would move to the bottom of the ocean. When he would get distracted from Allante poking at him, the dolphin would lift. It’s definitely something you have to see and/or try to believe, but we’re pretty skeptical about things like this and it actually works. Freer Logic says that Body Wave would expand in the future to be able to allow you to control things like turning on your cell phone or other home electronics with just your mind, and they also said the device would get a lot smaller before it becomes a mainstream product.

Thinkware Brings DVR Abilities to Your Car

Visiting the Thinkware booth allowed us to discover an in-car DVR system, useful for capturing the moments of an unfortunate accident or for sight-seeing. Thinkware’s FXD-700 is a front device recorder that picks up images, speed and time and starts recording as soon as you start the car, with help of a motion sensor. All of it then saves to an SD card, in a format which can be used on all computers, and will continuously record for up to 8 hours, unless you would like to expand up to 32GB. The full 1080p HD camera sensor is also impressive, allowing up to 140 degrees of viewing and the rear-camera (which is optional) gives you 120 degrees. Thinkware also said that the device is simply powered off of the car battery, which gives you the ability to record while the car is off, in surveillance mode, and will shut off if the device is draining the battery. The product isn’t available in the US yet but Thinkware is looking to make that happen within a few months.

StickNFind Bluetooth ID Tag System : TPN Best of CES2013

It’s almost unheard of for an IndyGoGo project to raise TEN TIMES the goal – but StickNFind has set the record with thousands of excited people waiting to get their hands on the product. It’s easy to see why. The system is built on a smartphone app that takes a “James Bond” style radar view for any object that has a Stick N Find tag affixed to it, and beeps as you get closer and closer to the object. The system is Bluetooth based, giving a range of a few hundred feet – but the smart phone app can adapt to a number of use scenarios. For example if a pet or child goes out of the range, it can immediately set an alarm. If an object comes into range (for example, luggage on an airline carousel) an alarm can sound. Plus, multiple tags can be observed by the same system. We were so impressed with this product that we gave it the highest honor – the TPN Best of Show for CES2013.

One of the most interesting and unique technologies we saw at Eureka Park at CES came from Displair. This company is the inventor of the first interactive airborne display, by the same name, complete with multi-touch support. This is perfect for anybody doing advertising, promotional campaigns or anything else that needs the “cool” factor. The best thing about Displair is that the image stays totally penetrable for physical objects. For example, we got to see a demo of Fruit Ninja and were able to slash those fruits into oblivion by slicing through the screen. This is a really great product that you’ve just got to see to get it.

Jhoombox Makes Karaoke a Blast Again

Jhoombox is the first streaming box that makes you sing. Running off of Android, think of it like a mix between a Roku and a karaoke machine, where you’re connected to the Internet and you don’t need any special cables to get the party started. Plus, just like any other TV enhancer, it’s got movies, TV shows, music, games, social apps and a web browser. We personally like the fact that you can live search thousands of available songs, record your song, publish it and then share it across almost any social network, including quick YouTube uploading. The console itself looks like a little keyboard and you get a really nice air mouse controller with it as well. Jhoombox still has some time before it hits shelves, but at that point the company looks to have millions of songs in its library to sing to.

Action cameras have been one of the latest crazes at CES. From GoPro to one of our favorites, Liquid Image’s Apex HD, the cameras have gotten better, have added Wi-Fi and can really take a beating. But something is lacking from those gadgets once you capture that stunt or trick – the data. Not the video itself, but the science behind the video, like the acceleration rate or G-force the rider got from that last jump. Well, R360UND (pronounced “rebound”) looks to give you all of that with a sensor device that captures anything you’d ever want to know about that successful (or not so successful) backflip you just pulled off. It can read altitude, location, acceleration, G-force and more. You can then take that data and lay it over the video itself or, if it was a failed trick, look at the data to see where exactly the problem lied. So before you jump onto the ski lift and hit Devil’s Curve in Aspen, be sure to check out this video.

GoPro Hero 3

GoPro, the popular mobile camera that has been used to capture video of everything from spectacular mountain bike crashes to shark encounters under the sea, was at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

GoPro showed off the Hero 3 Black edition, which is 30 percent smaller and 20 percent lighter than the previous model. The new Black Edition has a 12 MP sensor and can shoot 4k at 15 FPS. While shooting video users will also be able to tap a button on the camera to grab a quick still image. There are also dual mics and a photo-burst mode.

The new version will retail for $399 and include a WiFi remote. The camera is available for purchase now.

Satzuma was at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to introduce an alarm clock. That may seem like no big deal, but this one packs a few additional features that the clock radio setting on your nightstand is likely not to have.

First of all, it doubles as a four-port USB hub. It also has a bit of a different look — it appears to be one of those tiny director chalk boards with the snapping top that claps as the word “action” is yelled. But that wasn’t all — there was also a mini LED fan to keep you cool when that heat is radiating off of your computer.

Prices were quite reasonable as well, ranging in the $15-20 market. You can grab the goods from Satzuma directly or check them out at retailers like Staples.

A New Form of Stereo-Lithography for Consumer Use

Formlabs, Inc combines software and a different chemical process and feedstock to create a novel 3D printer. Targeted at professional end of the market, it is still within range of the serious hobbyist or tech enthusiast, and offers unprecedented resolution for detailed work.

Most 3D printers are based upon a thermoplastic technique – essentially a precision position X-Y-Z glue gun. The layer resolution is typically around a millimeter. This system uses a photopolymer-based process, where a high precision system directs a laser across a tray of liquid resin and causes a thin layer to solidify. This process creates layers that are much thinner, on the order of 25 microns (.025 millimeters) The build platform then rises in preparation for the next layer. After thousands of repetitions, your part is complete with exquisite detail.

RC Logger introduces an affordable unit that will let you get started in the remote control aircraft hobby on a budget. RC Logger has set out to find the sweet spot with a $79 unit that has the range and performance that challenge the bigger units and provide affordable entry into the RC pilot club.

The unit has a learning mode to allow you to start slowly. After you build your skills, there’s a more aggressive sport setting. Flight times are about 7-8 minutes. Three time CES Innovation Winner NetAtmo has designed a micro air quality sensor compatible with Android and iOS devices. Official air quality monitors are not plentiful enough to measure and report air quality in microclimates that exist across the entire city, so these units augment the official measurement systems, and provide a more complete picture of the changes moment to moment.

The unit links via Bluetooth and compares interior and exterior air quality, pollution, humidity and air pressure. The Wifi connected base station uploads to the user account, which is then accessible from the Smartphone app.

This is what happens when you let engineers ask “What if”. The question was if they could build an LED light that could project 15,000 lumens. The answer – yes!

The Maelstrom Xm18 by FourSevens is a LED light with three settings – 600, 3,000 and 15,000 lumens. There is even a strobe feature for emergency or dancing.

The XM18 is battery driven. 26 – 18650 cells with fan cooling and aluminum heat sink. The light can get so hot that if it turned on during transport the case would melt. That is why FourSevens set up a two-point on switch.

Complete with rechargeable battery, the Min-ETune self tuning system is now encased in the head stock (as opposed to the body from previous models). This makes it easier to tune since its within the guitarist’s peripheral vision.

Toshiba showed off some of the sleekest ultrabooks we’ve seen at any CES to date that weren’t just prototypes. I was able to put my hands on four different models, ranging from a 21:9 aspect ratio ultrabook made for watching movies without having any bars on the sides, to a really great convertible that maintains the battery life we’ve been expecting to find in ultrabooks today. Toshiba also introduced their first touchscreen at a very affordable price, proving that the big companies are really onboard with the Windows 8 user experience.

Something else ION debuted at CES was AirCopy, a world’s first and something that makes you wonder why it wasn’t invented sooner. It’s a wireless scanner that generates its own Wi-Fi network so users can send any image over to their tablet or computer without needing to connect to an actual Internet network, or without having to load them into a computer, then sideload them to a mobile device. Call up the app from any device, slide the document in and off you go. It simply runs off a rechargeable battery that can charge via USB and gives you about four hours of use time in about half the time to charge and it works across almost every platform, iOS, Android and Windows Phone.

Of course, with Gorilla Glass, it’s all about the live demo, but here’s a quick rundown. The new Gorilla Glass 3.0 with Native Damage Resistance (NDR) can be made as thin as .5 nanometers and up to 2nm and is able to withstand scratches of over 7 Newton of force and critical loads of up to 15,000 grams before cracks will start to appear.
