The One Laptop Per Child Foundation has been pursuing dreams on behalf of millions of children around the world, while keeping pace with the changes in technology and wireless connectivity. This new UI is built around the idea that children’s dreams and hero’s are a good way to group applications and opportunity. The UI is built with full parental controls, with up to three profiles available for age appropriate access to internet assets.

The built in camera is designed for experimentation and applications encourage the child to get out and explore their world with the camera and creativity.

This is the fifth generation of  technology that OLPC has implemented. It is an Android based system, with many apps programmed in Python. The first US based retailer to get the unit will be Walmart, but the price point has not yet been set.  More info at XOLearning.org and Laptop.org

Now the company, in keeping with the times, is moving into the realm of Ultrabooks, which is the latest catchphrase in the tech world. The Thinkpad Helix is an 11.6-inch notebook that packs an Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB of RAM, 1080p display and 256 GB SSD for storage. Those are all impressive numbers, but that is not really what the Helix is about.

The real magic, providing everything works as expected, is that this ultrabook separates to become a tablet. When in laptop mode Lenovo claims 4 four hours of battery life, but when it is converted to a tablet the company is touting six hours. It can also sit backwards in that keyboard base, making it a tablet stand.

The price starts at $1499 and the Thinkpad Helix will be available in the first quarter of this year.

This service might offer a digital content producer a more effective way to keep content fresh for subscribers without the overhead of e-commerce, shopping carts or elaborate back end system , yet maintain and extend the relationship for follow on order. It is a great way to keep your production and inventory costs under control.

USB-Cloud is a plug in key that maps the physical device – sold or given to a subscriber. When  it is plugged into a Windows or Mac computer’s USB port, it will automatically connect to a cloud based digial asset whenever. Each customer can be connected to a common content distribution point, or to a distribution point that has been created only for the person that has that one key ID.

There is no log-in, username, password, or similar requirement. Physical possession of the key is all that is required to access the asset. It is fully automatic on Windows machines. Mac OSX requires a one time driver download.

David Politis joins us once again to show us these great products. Along with the Microserver, Xi3 announced the Xi3 data center. 24 units of rackspace – so it can hold a conventional server – but you can also put 3 Xi3 Microservers into the  space and have up to 224 Xi3 computers right in the box. All air controlled and redundant power.

The datacenter also is on a cart which can be pushed, or motorized. This makes the Xi3 datacenter perfect for a small company that has limited space, a mobile company, disaster station, and more. You could literally have your server room move from room to room. Best part is the Xi3 is modular, so more additions will be coming in the future.

Xi3 Microserver will be released and priced later in the year. The datacenter will be around $500,000 .

IEEE.org looks at all aspects of today’s technology, but also helps to set standards for some of it. You may have seen their logo on some products, but they have their hands on a lot more than you may realize, like 3D for instance. They also offer a lot of conferences on a broad range of topics and a large digital library that is open to the public. In addition, they also work with people to ensure the technical accuracy of papers and documentation before publication.

The video below is a fascinating, but technical, look behind the scenes. If you are interested by how this industry works, though, it’s worth checking out.

In the past year, the last remaining IPv4 addresses were handed out to global regions. Some areas of the world have already run out of unallocated addresses, so it’s essential that in the next few years everyone starts using IPv6. This year, theWorld IPv6 Launch happens on 6 June 2012, with internet service providers (ISPs), networking equipment manufacturers and web companies permanently enabling IPv6 for their products and services. This is a big step forward in the transition to IPv6 but don’t worry, IPv4 isn’t going away for at least 10 years.

CTX Technologies also showed off an iPhone dock that not only charges your handset but can project a virtual keyboard onto the surface in front of it and allow you to type emails, documents, or whatever simply by touching the “buttons”.

Gianni Martinez was nice enough to talk to us and give us a hands on demonstration despite the fact that he was about to keel over from exhaustion (just like me). Designed to be an ergonomic work station, it’s purpose it straightforward. Create an environment where the user has easy access to the technology they require and allow them to leverage its use in a way that maximizes the user’s performance.

I had a chance to try it out myself and even though I was only able to experience it for a short time, it does seem that 10-12 hour shifts would pass by rather quickly and comfortably. Take into consideration the amount of time and energy we invest into using our computers and a $6,200 investment in yourself is a small price to pay over the long run. The key thing to note at Corsair is that the devices are designed by gamers for gamers. Everyone at Corsair has the passion and drive to make gaming a better and more enjoyable experience for the consumer and everything that the designers do and put together at Corsair is done with honest care. It’s something you rarely see in manufacturing anymore and was certainly refreshing to see when we got to talk to some of the designers.

Starting with the 90 Series, they are optimized for MMO and RTS games that require a lot of actions per minute or macros recorded to specific keys. The 60 Series are designed for first-person shooters. Both sets of keyboards have the Cherry MX Red keys, which allow very light, precise touches and triple taps for the hardcore gamers. Each of the mice also come with 5700 DPI, however feature adjustable, on-the-fly DPI options for your needs per game. The cool thing about the M60 is that the mouse has a “sniper” button, which drops your DPI immediately to 800 (default) in order to scan, acquire and then take out your enemies. It gives you the option to keep your movements natural and not have to be twitchy when you play your FPS. On the M90, it has 9 macro programmable buttons, however the buttons are placed in a way so that your thumb does not hit them or accidentally trigger a macro. This allows you to not have to disengage some of them because they are simply in the way.

Now, while you can have the best keyboard and mouse on the market, you still need to hear what’s happening around you and Corsair has crafted some gaming headsets that do not overwhelm you with over-enhanced bass. The Vengeance 1100, 1300 and 1500 are here to offer several options for gamers that have different budgets.

With Corsair, all you need is motherboard, CPU and video card and you can get everything else you need for your computer from them. For all our gamers out there, Corsair is definitely worth checking out for your gaming needs.

The new Samsung Series 9 will come in both 13 inch and 15 inch versions. The new laptops are extremely thin and light and sport all-aluminum bodies. In addition, the Series 9 has a back-lit keyboard, a 128 GB or 256 GB SSD, an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, and a high-resolution 1600 x 900 screen. The Samsung Series 9 notebooks should be available sometime this spring for an as-yet-undisclosed price. You can get a look at the 15″ version in the video posted below.

What if you made your computer the cloud, that is the solution that Polkast came up with. You install the Polkast server on the computer you want to access the files from and then the Polkast app on your mobile devices including your smart phone, tablets or lap top. You can then access the files on that computer from anywhere in the world as long as the server is running. To access files using Polkast you have to sign in with a user name and password. Everything is encrypted while going from PC to PC or mobile device. Unlike a cloud base solution there is no storage limitation and it is as fast as your local ISP. You can share specific files with other people by email or through their Polkast account. The service is free for one computer for multiple devices it is $49.95 a year. If you are looking for a way to access your home files on the road, but are wary of a cloud solution, this might be a solution for you.

Although I haven’t seen the HP Envy 14 Spectre referred to as an “Ultrabook” that’s the first word that comes to mind when I see it. The sleek, thin design and the lack of an optical drive all point to that category, which was the hot meme at CES 2012. Marvell builds the design. They work with Quantive manufacturing, who build the tablets based on orders from agencies like a Ministry of Education or an educational organization. Their goal is to have the unit price well below the $180.00 which is the cost of the OLPC computer.

The Wormhole Station combined with the Wormhole cable creates a keyboard and mouse switch which not only controls both a PC and a Mac from one mouse and keyboard but also moves files seamlessly from one computer to the other. Even cooler, you can set the configuration up so that moving the mouse cursor off one side of Mac screen transfers the cursor to the PC screen. It’s a bit like having a dual monitor setup, only with two OSes!

Using the same LG touch screen as the iPad, this tablet offers twin USB ports, a microSD slot, front- and rear-facing cameras and runs Android 2.2. It’s also slightly lighter and thinner than the iPad. Unfortunately, the model in the video is a non-working prototype but it does look good. $399 for the 16 GB, wifi version and available in the Spring.

Todd Cochrane interviewed Rick Osterlash, VP of Consumer Products for Skype at CES 2011. Skype announce several new products and partnerships either at CES or just prior to it.

The first product Mr Osterlash talked about was a new version of Skype for the iPhone, which allows two-way video calling. The calls can be either phone to phone or phone to desktop. This update was issued just before New Years and over the New Year’s holiday there were more than 1 million video calls made from the iPhone. Apple was very helpful in getting the application on the iPhone. Second Skype announced a partnership with Verizon which will enable Skype on LTE Advance devices including Android. Furthermore they announced a partnership with various TV manufactures. Skype will come installed on certain TVs, allowing consumers to make video Skype calls directly from these TVs. At the same time they also announced partnerships with some Blue-Ray manufactures which would allow customers to use Skype on older TVs. Finally they announced that the new version of Skype on the desktop will allow group video calls. This is available for both Windows and Mac, although the Mac version is still in beta.

Skype is doing very well in fact there was a study done by TeleGeography which said that 25 percent of all international calls are now done through Skype, and that number is only increasing.

Todd Cochrane spoke to Richard of the American Registry of Internet Numbers or ARIN. ARIN provides service related to the management of Internet number resources in its specific region. There are five RIR in the world, the American registry serves the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. One of their main purposes today is to get out the word that IPv4 numbers are running out. IPv4 is based on 32 bits with 4 billion addresses.

According to Richard, even if we got back all the legacy IPv4 addresses that are no longer in use we would only have enough addresses for another 10 years. Right now most regions will run out of their allocation of IPv4 addresses sometime this year. ARIN will have no more to give them. When this happens if the regional ISP provider hasn’t switched over to IPv6, they will be forced to do things like have multiple consumers use the same IPv4 address. This will increase latency for the consumer and could break some equipment.

IPV6 has been around since 1998, however it has taken sometime for manufacture to make their equipment IPv6 capable, Today all Windows, Mac and most Linux distributions are IPv6 capable, however there is a lot of electronic equipment that is not. If you are buying a new piece of hardware, make sure it is IPv6 capable. IPv6 is based on 128 bits with support for 2 to the 128th power addresses. Once everything moves over to IPv6 we should have enough addresses to last for centuries. For now we will have the mixture of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

David Politis stopped by the CES live booth to talk about the Xi3 - a remarkable computer in it’s own right. However, he also showed us Z3ro, a module that turns this one small computer, into four.

The Xi3 is an idea – take the motherboard of a computer and modularize it. Therefore, if one part of the computer goes, you get the replacement and pop it right in there. Especially nowadays when the GPU is in the CPU and the Solid State Drive is getting put right on the board.

David shows us how easy it is to open and fix. Better yet, David also showed off Z3ro – a terminal emulating device that can turn the one computer into 2. You can put 3 – Z3ro adaptors and turn one computer into four!

Validity is different from other fingerprint swipe technologies for they separate the sendor from the silicon. The end result is the sensor is not broken. The best part is the newer versions can change color to let you know if it worked or not.

With a 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, this tablet is set more like a book. Light in weight – only 530 grams – this dual screen tablet lets you read on one side and watch video, or have another reference on the other.

This tablet hasn’t been released in the US yet, but in Japan you can get one for 44,000 yen (appx $529 US). The LT-W runs Android 2.2 and connects with Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G. The LT-W does have a USB port and headphone jack.

Motion has created a series of scanners and tablets for those in the commercial and industrial areas. Rugged devices for the construction workers, medical professionals and those who need a mobile solution in their jobs can use these tablets to keep up with the work.

The CL900 is one of those tablets. The 2.1 lb tablet contains a 1.5 GHz ATOM processor, 1 GB RAM and 30 GB SSD. The tablet will be available in Q2 for $1000. You can also add other items like Fingerprint readers and mag stripes.

AlessiTab

Most of the tablets we saw at CES were meant to be for those on the go. The AlessiTab is actually meant to stay in the home – The Kitchen to be exact. It’s unique design automatically acts as a stand in multiple variations. The AlessiTab sets on a charging pad so you can keep the device ready for use.

Running on Android, the AlessiTab can hold all your favorite recipes, video on how to make favorite dishes or just to surf the internet. Use the tablet to remote control the TV or better yet, pull out the antenna and the AlessiTab also becomes a Digital TV receiver.

The Italian design makes it a sleek and stylish item to have around the house. The gravitational center knows which way the tablet is set.

Lexmark Genesis

Lexmark has been hard at work getting you a new printer with great strides in technology. Instead of a scanner, the Genesis has a 10 MP camera. The instant preview gets you an idea of your scan in 3 seconds.

The upright design also saves on desk space. It has 802.11n, connects to USB and other external card solutions, and has Smart solutions so you can scan to apps like Evernote. Through the web, you will be able to do a lot with this printer.

The printer is run through the 4.3″ touch screen. You will be able to Fax, copy, scan fax or send to the web. The thermal inkjet can print 33 PPM B&W (30 color draft) and resolutions up to 4800 x 1200 dp (color).
